- [Week of Hand Harvesting Finds Little Milfoil.](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/week-of-hand-harvesting-finds-little-milfoil/): A four-diver hand-harvesting crew from Aqualogic came to #chateaugaylake this past week to harvest milfoil. They targeted beds that were not part of the herbicide treatment in late June. The divers found very little milfoil. They checked the part of the Upper Narrows from the bridge to the sand bar that had been treated with herbicide in 2024, to remove any regrowth. They found the boat launch was free of milfoil. Around the islands by the sand bar, CLF scouts had seen some milfoil reaching the surface in early July, but not a healthy color. The dive crew found dead plants lying on the lake bed and collected about 35 gallons of milfoil, to prevent resprouting from any roots that might still be viable. The divers also checked the stretch northeast of the sand bar in the Upper Lake and found a limited number of dead plants.
- [Preliminary Surveys Show ProcellaCOR Treatment Highly Effective.](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/preliminary-surveys-show-procellacor-treatment-highly-effective/): Following the June 25th treatment of milfoil beds in the South Inlet and nearby Deep Bay in the Upper Lake, surveys by lake volunteers found no actively growing milfoil and evidence of die-off. On July 5th, ten days post-treatment, a survey of Deep Bay found only yellowing and dying plants (see photos). A week later, the milfoil was lying flat on the bottom. A survey of the South Inlet basin on July 12th found no milfoil visible throughout the entire 120 acre bed. The only visible milfoil plants were a few yellowing strands along Indian Point, in the dilution zone, with plants lying on the bottom. Both surveys found thriving native plants including pond lilies. These preliminary surveys are very encouraging for the success of the ProcellaCOR treatment. They will be followed by formal surveys in late August—one by the treatment applicator, Ready-Scout, and a comprehensive aquatic plant survey to compare the plants present before and after treatment by the independent survey firm of Adirondack Research.

The team was deployed to harvest the beds that had been planned for herbicide treatment this year—Beds B, D, and H as shown on the map. The ProcellaCOR treatment was not carried out because the Eurasian milfoil had not emerged sufficiently by the treatment deadline of June 30. They also revisited Bed I along Indian Point.

- [Herbicide Treatment Update](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/herbicide-treatement-update/): PERMITS APPROVED BUT EURASIAN MILFOIL NOT UP YET!  NO HERBICIDE TREATMENT IN 2025. In mid-June, the CLF’s application for herbicide treatment of four beds in the Upper Lake, including the South Inlet, was approved by the Adirondack Park Agency. Then, on Thursday, June 26, the NYS DEC approved the companion work plan to treat the state underwater lands in the South Inlet (Bed W).  This was exciting news! However, the required pre-treatment survey of milfoil conditions, conducted on June 13, showed that milfoil had yet to emerge. A follow-up survey earlier this week confirmed lagging emergence—only one stand in the western bay of the South Inlet was in evidence. This is probably due to a cold and rainy spring. The lake temperature was only 62 degrees at the time of the mid-June survey and water levels were high, which shades out growth.  Regulatory agency policy sets a deadline of June 30 to treat with herbicide, to minimize impacts to non-target plants that usually emerge later than Eurasian milfoil.  Because conditions are not appropriate for treatment prior to the deadline, the CLF will hold off on ProcellaCOR EC treatment this year.

- [Week 1 Milfoil Harvesting Update:  Lower Lake](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/week-1-milfoil-harvesting-update-lower-lake/): Divers Hand-Harvest Lower Lake Inlet - The SCUBA divers from Invasive Solutions Dive Company returned this past week to continue hand-harvesting the bed of Eurasian milfoil that spreads across the Lower Lake inlet at the mouth of the Narrows. The three-person crew included two divers who are familiar with Chateaugay Lake from past years. The work plan has been to clear and maintain a marked boating lane through the bed to help boaters avoid the milfoil and reduce fragments that spread the plant. Harvesting has been done every year since 2018 and the divers reported that the milfoil has been greatly reduced in the boating lane. This allowed them to extend the harvesting on either side and work further south into the Narrows. They adjusted the buoys marking the lane, so it would be well marked for the July 4th boat parade. Boaters should travel between the buoys, not around them!
- [Update on Herbicide Treatment for Eurasian Watermilfoil](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/update-on-herbicide-treatment-for-eurasian-watermilfoil/): The herbicide is applied underwater through injection hoses from a tank where it has been mixed with water to the right concentration. See the photo of the air boat rig. The Eurasian watermilfoil absorbs the herbicide, which mimics a plant hormone that stimulates rapid growth. This causes the stems to elongate, and the plant collapses and dies back. The milfoil die-off will be occurring over two or three weeks and is similar to the end-of-season die-off that occurs naturally each year. The treatment takes place early in the growing season to reduce the amount of biomass and also minimize the impact on other aquatic plants, which tend to emerge later than Eurasian watermilfoil. Native plants that are somewhat susceptible, such as water lilies and coontail, may show some browning and stem curl, but typically recover.

- [Week 2 Milfoil Harvesting Update:  Lower Lake Inlet](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/week-2-milfoil-harvesting-update-lower-lake-inlet/): The milfoil crew wrapped up the second week of harvesting with another full trailer of Eurasian milfoil. They removed 2,363 pounds, almost 1.2 tons, from the Lower Lake inlet. The final afternoon they returned to the boat launch to finish up the north boating access lane. The divers return the weeks of August 7th and 14th to work in the Upper Lake.

- [Survey Team in the South Inlet](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/survey-team-in-the-south-inlet/): If you’ve seen a small motorboat weaving through the South Inlet, you have spotted CLF’s survey team! For the past five years, Bill Widrig, Kathy Welch and others have conducted the Lake Management Tracker Survey (LMT) of South Inlet to monitor and record data on both native plant species and Eurasian Watermilfoil. Over two hundred GPS waypoints are visited, raked with a special aquatic rake and the findings recorded in a survey app called Survey123. This information is shared with the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program and helps to inform CLF’s harvesting plans for the following summer. 
- [ATTENTION BOATERS!! ](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/attention-boaters/): New milfoil buoys have been installed in the south end of the Lower Lake to mark a cleared path through the milfoil bed that stretches across the inlet. Please travel between the buoys, not around them, to avoid the milfoil. If you need to enter or exit the path to reach your camp, take the most direct route to minimize travel through the bed. - [Week 6 Milfoil Harvesting Update:  New Upper Lake Work Site!](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/week-6-milfoil-harvesting-update-new-upper-lake-work-site/): Milfoil divers wrapped up the harvesting season with a second week of work in the Upper Lake. They moved on from the Indian Point site early in the week and established a new harvesting site on the southeastern shoreline. The new site was identified in last summer's plant survey as a very dense bed of milfoil close to the Boomhower Road shoreline (see circled areas on survey map). The divers found tall bushy multi-stem plants. On Wednesday, with sunny and calm conditions, they harvested a new daily record of 68 bags (1,700 pounds). The total harvest for the week was 194 bags (4,850 pounds or over 2.4 tons). It was a strong finish for a busy season. The next goal for the Upper Lake is to push back the edge of the milfoil that has extended beyond the milfoil buoys on the east, while maintaining the Indian Point site on the west.
- [Week 5 Milfoil Harvesting Update: Upper Lake](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/week-5-milfoil-harvesting-update-upper-lake/): On July 11, the milfoil crew moved to the Upper Lake to continue clearing a site that has been an ongoing focus--the shoreline south of Indian Point. This site has had the highest milfoil density of any site on the Upper Lake. Because of prevailing winds and water currents, this bed has been a source of fragments that have spread milfoil to other parts of the lake. The crew pushed forward toward Buoy 4 on the milfoil hazard perimeter line, harvesting 149 bags (3,725 pounds). Week 5 saw an important milestone. The Indian Point site has been brought under control! Attention can shift to another priority area--the eastern shoreline of the South Inlet basin.
- [Week 4 Milfoil Harvesting Update:  Lower Lake Inlet](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/week-4-milfoil-harvesting-update-lower-lake-inlet/): Divers returned to the Lower Lake Inlet for a second week following the July 4th holiday, removing 157 bags of milfoil (about two tons). They continued to clear and widen the boating path that has now been marked by milfoil buoys.  Boaters are reminded that the buoys mark a cleared path through the milfoil bed at the south end of the Lower Lake.  Try to travel between the buoys, not around them.  If you need to enter or exit the path to reach your camp, travel at a 90-degree angle from the path to minimize travel through the bed. This will help reduce milfoil fragments that can take root and create more plants. The maps show the harvest activity in the Lower Lake over the two weeks of harvesting. The dots represent the bags removed.
- [Week 3 Milfoil Harvesting Update:  Lower Lake Inlet](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/week-3-milfoil-harvesting-update-lower-lake-inlet/): In the week leading up to the July 4th holiday, the milfoil divers harvested 159 bags of milfoil (3,975 pounds or almost two tons) from the inlet to the Lower Lake. The divers worked to clear a boating lane through the milfoil bed that stretches across the south end of the Lower Lake.  Large marker buoys have now been placed at either end of the cleared path to guide boaters.  At the end of each workday, the divers unload the bags into a trailer that is used to transport the collected milfoil for composting at approved locations nearby. Last Thursday, they spoke about the harvesting process with some members of the ADK Shatagee Woods chapter, who were meeting nearby (https://shatageeadk.org/).
- [Important Alert – New Buoys Show Path Through Milfoil](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/important-alert-new-buoys-show-path-through-milfoil/): Four new buoys are being installed in the south end of the Lower Lake. The buoys mark a path through the large milfoil bed at the inlet from the Narrows.  The buoys remind boaters to "Use Boat Lane" to avoid milfoil.  The milfoil divers have cleared a lane between the buoys for boaters to pass without chopping the milfoil, which spreads through fragments that take root. Tomorrow's boat parade will be the first chance to use the lane.  Happy July 4th holiday to all!!
- [Week 2 Milfoil Harvesting Update: Boating Lane to Upper Lake](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/week-2-milfoil-harvesting-update-boating-lane-to-upper-lake/): The milfoil crew focused on clearing dense patches in the boating lane leading from the boat launch to the Upper Lake. They paid special attention to the western side of the boat launch and the lane going past the Sand Bar and around the tip. The divers removed 168 bags of milfoil at about 25 pounds each, totaling 4,200 pounds. This week the crew moves to the inlet to the Lower Lake. They will continue to expand a cleared boating lane through the dense milfoil at the mouth of the Narrows.
- [Chateaugay Lake Needs You!](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/chateaugay-lake-needs-you/): Can you help protect Chateaugay Lake? Join a dedicated group of volunteers who are making a difference. The Chateaugay Lake Foundation (CLF) began 15 years ago in response to invasive Eurasian watermilfoil taking over more and more of the shoreline. Since then, our fundraising has paid for control work that has kept milfoil from choking boating lanes and helped slow its rate of spread. Shorelines have been restored for swimming. This critical work needs to continue. The CLF is also a point of contact and partner with others in the region for environmental issues affecting the lake. We need to continue to build this network of support.
- [Milfoil Harvesting Underway!](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/milfoil-harvesting-underway/): The SCUBA divers began harvesting this past week at the Chateaugay Lake boat launch.  Conditions were breezy and cool, with little boat traffic to hamper the divers.  They removed 147 bags (about 3,675 pounds) of the invasive plant - a good haul and similar to the first week last year. The divers will continue to work in the Narrows next week to clear the boating lane to the Upper Lake.
- [Plant Survey Results Coming In](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/plant-survey-results-coming-in/): Last summer, we engaged Northeast Aquatic Research to do a plant survey of the entire Chateaugay Lake shoreline to help plan for future Eurasian watermilfoil control. The survey team collected samples and made observations at one-acre intervals throughout the shoreline zone where aquatic plants grow—1,090 points in all. The good news is they found tremendous plant diversity in the lake system. They recorded 60 species of aquatic plants, all native except for Eurasian watermilfoil. Unfortunately, Eurasian water milfoil was the plant that occurred with the greatest frequency. It was found at 51% of sites. By comparison, the three native species found most often were tape grass (43%), waterweed (39%), and bassweed (25.5%). Other species occurred at fewer than 20% of sites. The survey report is being finalized and should be available soon for posting on the CLF website.
- [Divers returned to Chateaugay Lake](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/divers-returned-to-chateaugay-lake/): Divers returned to Chateaugay Lake the weeks of 8/16 and 8/23 to finish up the milfoil harvesting season with work in the South Inlet. They worked south from Indian Point, harvesting 161 bags or 2.0 tons of milfoil the first week, and 205 bags or 2.6 tons as they reached denser growth the second week. Dense conditions are shown in the photo of the westernmost buoy marking the South Inlet milfoil bed. On Wednesday, the divers collected 67 bags in one day--a seasonal record for a three-person crew this summer, according to the dive team. With hard work and favorable working conditions, the team made good progress in this high-density area.
- [Extensive plant survey being done at Chateaugay Lake!](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/extensive-plant-survey-being-done-at-chateaugay-lake/): Chateaugay Lake Foundation is working with Northeast Aquatic Research (NEAR) to conduct the plant survey, which is taking place now at the height of the growing season. The results of the survey, including detailed maps of native and non-native vegetation will be used to determine the next steps in our management program. Here two of the plant specialists at NEAR work in South Inlet. As of last week, they found over 50 types of aquatic plants proving a great diversity of plant life in our lakes!
- [SCUBA divers returned to the Lower Lake](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/scuba-divers-returned-to-the-lower-lake/): SCUBA divers returned to the Lower Lake after the July 4th holiday and harvested 132 bags (1 2/3 tons) of milfoil from the large bed at the Lower Lake inlet. This bed extends quite a ways north from the mouth of the inlet, as shown in the photo of the work site (view toward the eastern shore). The final work day the crew was breaking new ground and harvested 55 bags (2/3 ton) on that day alone. This year, drought and low water levels are spurring milfoil growth as light penetrates more easily. The divers will be returning to Chateaugay Lake in a couple of weeks to spend two weeks harvesting in the Upper Lake
- [Week 2 Harvest](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/week-2-harvest/): The divers returned to finish the boat launch early in the week, removing 35 bags (875 pounds) of milfoil from the north and south boating access lanes. Tuesday afternoon they moved to the boating access lanes at the sand bar and finished the week clearing heavy milfoil off Buck Horn point, harvesting 79 bags (1,975 pounds). Total for the week: 1.4 tons.

This was greater than the last two summers and may be due to the warmer weather and water temperatures we have been experiencing. The crew focused on the northern half of the boat launch site.

- [Milfoil Project](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/milfoil-project/): CLF began Eurasian watermilfoil control in 2008 and, with donor support, efforts have continued each summer since then. The CLF has used a variety of methods including hand-harvesting, benthic matting and suction harvesting to control the milfoil.
- [Invasive Species](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/invasive-species/): Invasive species threaten waterbodies and landscapes and are a growing concern locally, nationally and globally. Once established they are difficult and expensive to control. Invasive species cost $137-$146 billion annually in the United States. In the case of Chateaugay Lake, over $668,000 has been spent since milfoil control began in 2008, averaging about $43,000 annually.

- [Annual Surveys & Treatment](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/milfoil-control/annual-surveys-treatment/): Each summer since 2008, the Chateaugay Lake Foundation has engaged contractors for milfoil control services, including hand-harvesting and benthic mat placement. In 2012, use of benthic mats was discontinued and hand harvesting is now the primary method of milfoil control.

- [Protect the Lake Raffle / Ice Cream Social](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/events/protect-the-lake-raffle-ice-cream-social/): Our annual Protect the Lake raffle is underway! Prizes include a $500 cash prize, a beautiful black walnut bench, and dozens more. As we did last year, we are again offering tickets by mail. To allow enough time, please mail your raffle tickets back to us by Friday, 1 August. The drawing will be held at our Ice Cream Social on Sunday, 17 August. The Ice Cream Social will take place from 2-5 pm at the WSCS Camp on the Narrows, with live music by Steve and Erena Fulton and BBQ plates available from Smokehouse Pizzeria for $12. Admission is free with donations accepted at the door. The raffle drawing will be at 4 pm. You don't need to be present to win. Additional information is available HERE. Ticket price of $35 includes BBQ from Jenn’s Smokin’ Hot and open bar (beer/wine). Protect the Lake raffle drawing at 4:00 pm concludes the fun, with many prizes including a $500 cash prize. - [Chateaugay Lake Foundation Dinner](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/events/chateaugay-lake-foundation-dinner/): Over 175 friends and supporters turned out for the Chateaugay Lake Foundation's dinner on August 20th to raise funds for Chateaugay Lake milfoil control. Attendees enjoyed a delicious pulled pork dinner prepared by the staff of the American Legion in Lyon Mountain. Ice cream sundaes and beverages were generously donated by Stewart's Shops. The drawing for the "Protect the Lake" summer raffle was held at 6 pm, with 22 prizes raffled off. A heartfelt thank you to the local artists and artisans, businesses, and supporters who donated prizes. The dinner and raffle raised over $6,500 to support the milfoil control program. Thanks to all for your support!
- [Help Update Chateaugay Lake’s Milfoil Management Plan!](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/events/help-update-chateaugay-lakes-milfoil-management-plan/): Several public information and discussion sessions are being planned for the July-August timeframe to help the Chateaugay Lake Foundation update its milfoil management strategy.
- [Ice Cream Social and Raffle with Music by Fulton’s Folly](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/events/ice-cream-social-and-raffle-with-music-by-fultons-folly/): The Chateaugay Lake Foundation will be holding a summer raffle to benefit the Chateaugay Lake milfoil control project. Tickets will be sold at Harrigan’s Ice Cream on Saturdays at lunchtime and at the Owly Out on Thursday and Friday evenings starting in July.  The raffle drawing will be held on Sunday, August 21st at 4PM at the WSCS Camp on the Chateaugay Lake Narrows, 5401 State Route 374. Come early and enjoy an Ice Cream Social starting at 2pm, with music by local band Fulton’s Folly. For more information or to buy a ticket contact: info@chateaugaylakefoundation.org .
- [End of Summer Gathering](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/events/end-of-summer-gathering/): The CFL usually holds an annual fundraising event in August, before people disperse for the fall. In 2021, there was an Ice Cream Social at the historic WSCS Camp on the Chateaugay Narrows. Chateaugay Lake musicians Erena and Steve Fulton brought their friends from Fulton’s Folly to entertain the crowd. People enjoyed ice cream sundaes and drinks donated by Stewart’s Shops. All agreed we should do it again next year!
- [Raffle](https://chateaugaylakefoundation.org/events/raffle/): The CLF’s Protect the Lake summer raffle is an important source of support for the milfoil control project.  A variety of prizes are generously donated by Chateaugay Lake artists and artisans and local businesses.  The raffle goes all summer long, with the drawing held at the CLF’s end of summer fundraiser.
